Wayne, Midland maintain top spots

HUNTINGTON -- High school playoff time is drawing closer, putting extra meaning on the weekly state ratings.

Cabell Midland (8-0) in Class AAA and Wayne (7-0) in Class AA continue to hold the top spots in West Virginia while Tucker County (7-0) tops Class A.

Only the top 16 teams in each class will make the playoffs.

The regular season is down to two games for Cabell Midland, Friday at home against Princeton (1-7) and a Nov. 2 home game against No. 7 Hurricane (5-2).

Cabell Midland is ahead of No. 2 Martinsburg (7-1) and No. 3 Huntington High (6-1) in Class AAA.

Huntington High has three regular season games left, all at home -- Friday against No. 25 Greenbrier East (2-5); Oct. 26 against No. 32 Riverside (1-6); and Nov. 2 against No. 19 Capital (4-3).

Spring Valley (4-3), tied for No. 12 with Point Pleasant, plays Friday at Hurricane.

No. 22 Shady Spring (4-3) is at Point Pleasant (5-2) on Friday while No. 24 Winfield (2-5) visits No. 26 Nitro (2-5). Winless Lincoln County (0-7) has a Friday home game against St. Albans (1-7).

Wayne has three Class AA regular season games remaining beginning with a Friday home game against No. 28 Poca (2-5). The Pioneers have an Oct. 26 trip to No. 18 Chapmanville (4-3) and finish Nov. 2 at home against No. 5 Bluefield (6-1).

Class AA No. 13 Mingo Central (4-3) continues is pursuit of a playoff berth Friday at Class AAA No. 18 at Logan (5-2). No. 27 Tolsia (3-5) is at Chapmanville on Friday.

Tucker County leads No. 2 Greenbrier West (7-1), No. 3 Wahama (8-0) and No. 4 Buffalo (6-1) in the Class A ratings.

Wahama is idle Friday while Buffalo plays at home against winless Fayetteville (0-7).

In Ohio, where eight teams from each region advance to the postseason, Ironton (5-3) is rated No. 2 in Division IV, Region 15 with its final regular season game Friday at Oak Hill (7-1), which is rated No. 1 in Division V, Region 19.

Wheelersburg (7-1) is at Lucasville Valley (6-2) in a Division V, Region 19 matchup of teams rated third and fourth respectively.

Division VI, Region 23 No. 6 Symmes Valley (6-2) has a Saturday game at No. 7 Portsmouth Notre Dame (6-2).
