CHARLESTON, WV — October 3, 2025
The Huntington Highlanders stormed into UC Stadium at Laidley Field and left no doubt in “The Battle for the Bell,” dismantling the Capital Cougars 38–6 in a dominant all-around performance that showcased poise, power, and precision. Quarterback Tayveon Wilson led the way with a statement game that left the home crowd stunned and the Highlander faithful roaring.
Senior quarterback Tayveon Wilson delivered an MVP-caliber performance, putting the offense in overdrive. Wilson completed 11 of 14 passes for 160 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air, adding 35 yards on 6 carries on the ground. His combination of efficiency and explosiveness was the heartbeat of Huntington’s offense, spreading the ball around with confidence and keeping Capital off balance all night.
From the opening drive, Wilson’s connection with his receivers was electric — his deep strikes and pocket awareness consistently kept the Cougars guessing. By the time the dust settled, Wilson had orchestrated one of the Highlanders’ most balanced offensive efforts of the season.
The Highlander rushing attack once again ran through the Okonkwo brothers, who punished the Cougar defense with their trademark mix of speed and strength.
Trevon Okonkwo bulldozed his way to 107 yards on 10 carries and scored one touchdown, including a highlight-reel 46-yard breakaway that silenced the Capital sideline.
MeShawn Okonkwo added 53 yards on 7 carries, consistently moving the chains and keeping the offense in rhythm.
Together, the duo accounted for over 150 yards on the ground, setting the tone early and giving Wilson the play-action window he needed to carve up the secondary.
It was a breakout night for wide receiver Andreas Reese, who put on a show under the Friday night lights. Reese hauled in 5 receptions for 68 yards and 3 touchdowns, proving to be Wilson’s go-to target in the red zone. Each score showcased his crisp route running and sure hands.
Fellow receiver and defensive back Kellen Rife added 2 catches for 49 yards, including a spectacular 39-yard grab that set up a Highlander touchdown. Rife’s versatility continues to make him one of the team’s most valuable two-way contributors.
The Highlander defense once again looked championship-caliber, flying to the football and overwhelming Capital’s offense.
Linebacker Ilias King was the anchor in the middle, racking up 8 tackles (3 solo, 5 ast.) in a performance the Highlanders have become very acustomed to.
Defensive lineman Max Bohren added 5 tackles, 4 TFLs and a Sack in a performance living up to the name Mad Max.
Defensive back Ethan Dalton recorded 3 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 Sack, and 1 INT, while freshman DB Khryen Chandler made his presence felt with 3 tackles and an INT, showing maturity beyond his years.
With this emphatic victory, Huntington improves its season record and keeps momentum rolling as the Highlanders return home for Week 7 Homecoming on the Highlander Mountain Top at Bob Sang Stadium.
Their next test? The always-tough Parkersburg Big Reds — a storied rival looking to spoil Huntington’s celebration. But if Wilson and company continue firing on all cylinders, the Highlander faithful could be in for another unforgettable Friday night.
